About the Instructor
Alam Lembang was born in Sumatra, Indonesia. He holds the degree of Geophysical Engineer and Geological Engineer from Oil and Gas Institute of Bucharest, Romania in 1963. Alam has broad experience and has been active in exploration geophysics and geology from seismic acquisition, seismic processing, to seismic interpretation and including additional potential field methods. He has played a key role in the Oil & Gas exploration phase covering geographical areas from tertiary basin of the jungle of Sumatra, paleozoic basin of Grand Erg Occidental in Algeria, mesozoic basin of southern part of Rhub Al Khali Sand Desert in the Yemen, mesozoic basin of Northern Syria, mesozoic basin of Cuba, tertiary basin of Romania, and the tertiary and mesozoic basin of Maracaibo and Eastern Venezuela basin. At the present he is consulting as geophysical adviser to Petroleos de Venezuela. Alam Lembang has over 30 years’ experience teaching short courses in exploration geophysics & geology. His teaching values are to highlight the critical concepts and principle fundamentals of geophysics and geology; in order to progress efficiently with minimized risks in today’s modern industry. He speaks English, Indonesian, Romanian, French and Spanish. Alam Lembang is Emeritus member of Society of Exploration Geophysics (SEG) and has received a medal “Honor al Merito” from the Society of Geophysics of Venezuela.
This course is intended to give explanation of Geophysical surveys that are deployed in oil exploration. Among these methods, the Seismic survey is the most important one. The complementary methods to seismic are the Gravity and Magnetic surveys. Therefore, most of the discussions in this course are mostly related to Seismic survey. Mathematical treatment, however, has been kept to a minimum. The Seismic survey has no capability to find directly the hydrocarbon (except in special case), but it does and it is capable to find spots favorable for hydrocarbon accumulation. Recently, though, a method called Very Low Frequency Passive Seismic claims to be able to locate, directly, hydrocarbon reservoir. For reconnaissance survey, the 2D method is used, and for a detailed survey the 3D method is a must. The advancement in 3D interpretation can go further to delineate a reservoir and describe its characteristics. However, for better delineation of a reservoir around a successful exploration well, a method called Vertical Seismic Profiling (VSP) can be used. Advanced Seismic methods such as Multicomponent Seismic and 4D Seismic is also discussed. In addition, since any measurement in Geophysics must have coordinates, the fundamental of Geodesy is also given here. This course comes with a manual that is intended to be used for sole purpose of training, exposing the participants to an overview of Geophysical Survey, from data acquisition, processing and interpretation.
